CURRICULUM

A purposeful curriculum for re-engagement and progression

Praxis Academy is developing a focused, part-time curriculum for pupils in Years 7 to 11 whose engagement with education has become fragile. Each pupil's programme will be planned around their assessed needs, starting points, placement objectives and commissioned support.

The Praxis curriculum is not intended to reproduce a complete mainstream school timetable. It will complement the pupil's wider education arrangements while prioritising the areas most important to re-engagement, including literacy, numeracy, personal development, emotional regulation, participation and preparation for a sustainable next step.

The precise content, frequency and level of study will vary according to the pupil's needs, placement length and agreed outcomes. Access to qualifications, accreditation or specialist activities will only be described as available where the relevant delivery arrangements have been confirmed.

CURRICULUM PRIORITIES

What the initial programme will prioritise

Each pupil's curriculum will be shaped by their starting points, placement objectives and agreed timetable. The initial Praxis programme will focus on four connected areas rather than offering every pupil an identical subject package.

CORE LEARNING

Targeted English, literacy, mathematics and numeracy teaching will help pupils address gaps, rebuild confidence and reconnect with academic learning. Other subject learning may be supported where it forms part of the agreed placement plan.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

PSHE and relationships and sex education will support age-appropriate learning about wellbeing, relationships, decision-making, safety, identity, community and preparation for adult life.

REGULATION AND PARTICIPATION

Structured routines, relational support and planned opportunities for reflection will help pupils strengthen emotional regulation, communication, attendance habits and participation in learning.

FUTURE READINESS

Pupils will be supported to understand their strengths, develop independence and prepare for reintegration, transition, further education, training or another appropriate destination.

Practical, creative, physical or outdoor activities may form part of a pupil's programme where they are suitable, available and included within the commissioned placement. Qualifications or accredited awards will only be offered where the relevant arrangements have been confirmed.

CURRICULUM DELIVERY

A programme built around need, not year group alone.

Pupils will receive age-appropriate learning, but their Praxis programme will not be determined by year group alone. Planning will take account of prior attainment, attendance history, SEND, safeguarding information, emotional and communication needs, placement length and the outcomes agreed with the commissioner.

PLAN

Available referral information, education records and agreed baseline information will be reviewed before or at the beginning of the placement. This will inform an individual programme, timetable and set of placement outcomes.

TEACH

Teaching will normally take place in groups of no more than six pupils. The anticipated core model is one teacher and one teaching assistant for each group, but staffing ratios are not fixed. They will be determined by assessed pupil needs, identified risks and the support commissioned for the placement.

REVIEW

Progress will be reviewed against each pupil's agreed starting points and placement objectives. Evidence may include attendance, punctuality, participation, engagement, literacy and numeracy development, emotional regulation, communication, independence and readiness for the next step.

The purpose of the Praxis curriculum is not simply to keep pupils occupied away from school. It is to rebuild access to learning, make progress visible and prepare each pupil for a more sustainable educational future.

TRANSITION

Curriculum planning will remain connected to the pupil's intended destination. Where appropriate, Praxis will work with the pupil, family, school and commissioning professionals to support reintegration, transition or progression to another suitable pathway.
